HOW DOES CAE MAKE THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS MORE EFFICIENT?

Traditional testing with physical prototypes is usually time consuming and costly. At the same time, customer expectations and competitive and innovation pressures are rising faster than ever before. Although these physical prototypes cannot be completely replaced by the use of simulation software, their number can be significantly reduced in all development phases.

Each individual component is first digitally generated with its individual physical properties. The components are then assembled to form an exact replica of the product. On the basis of this model, any number of tests can now be carried out virtually under various environmental conditions - until all requirements have been met. Weak points are detected at an early stage, deformations and warpage can be predicted and manufacturability checked. In this way, quality, product performance and safety are not only guaranteed, but in many cases even improved.

WHEN SHOULD SIMULATION BE USED?

In many cases, simulation is only used when a previously developed product design is to be validated. If the simulation expert identifies errors or potential for improvement during the virtual prototype tests, the design must be returned to the designer for revision. The new variant is then to be tested again. This process is repeated over and over again - often a large number of iteration steps occur.

In addition, communication between product design and simulation is often difficult. Both sides work with different tools and terms - they do not speak the same language.

If simulation is used not only for validation, but also during the design process (Simulation Driven Design), the number of iteration steps is significantly reduced. The Generative Design Explorer (GDE) module of Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform is designed to do just that - it combines design and simulation. The tool enables designers to work directly on the 3D model and thus optimize their design right from the start. It also facilitates the exchange between design engineers and simulation experts. The development time can thus be significantly reduced.
